events in human history. While there are clearly many more historical places and events in the history of western civilization, the fall of the Roman Empire is interesting for a number of reasons. The following paper examines why this is an interesting topic for one to study. The Fall of the Roman Empire One of the most interesting, as well as important, aspects of the fall of the Roman Empire to consider is that which is connected with all empires, all governments, cultures, and powers throughout history, including powers that exist today. Rome was the center of power, the center of intellect and economic power and of thought and culture. There have been many such cultures throughout time. For example, there were the Egyptians who ruled the world as well, although less is known about them than the Romans. There were powers in various parts of the world, granted not as big as Roman power, but still important. And, in present conditions there are many "empires" that one could claim possessed incredible power and influence, such as the United States. In the decline and fall of the Roman Empire lessons can be learned about assumed eternal power and arrogance and complacency. For example, the United States, like Rome, is in a position that seems all but infallible in terms of controlling much of the known world in one way or another. And, in the case of Rome, "The Romans were ignorant of the extent of their danger, and the number of their enemies" (Gibbon, 2008). In essence, Rome teaches an interesting and important truth in that no "empire" lasts forever and in ignorance lies possible destruction.
