the psychological realities of the human mind. His stories seemed to be about relatively normal individuals who ultimately suffer from some psychological problem that seems to symbolize the psyche of
people that is often hidden deep beneath the surface of most people, never really seeing reality. In his short story The Fall of the House of Usher this seems to
be the case with one individual who suffers from events and conditions that ultimately drive him mad. It is a horrific tale, steeped in imagery that invokes fear and uncertainty.
In this respect the reader clearly begins to somehow understand the madness experienced by the man. The following paper analyzes how the main character Roderick slowly descends and perhaps through
a subconscious sympathy, the reader feels a connection with the descent. The Fall of the House of Usher by Poe One of the most powerful tools or elements
in this story is the narrator, a friend of Rodericks, who introduces the reader to the man and his sister and the house. The narrator is nameless and in this
subtle play in literature the reader is welcomed into the events without having a name. This narrator is an old friend of Rodericks who Roderick believes can make things better
for him, lift his spirits, and perhaps bring him a bit of distraction and joy as he descends. This narrator is very powerful and as one author notes, "It
is easy for the reader to become the friend in Poes story as both the narrator and the reader invite madness as they are drawn into the underworld of the
