It seems as if the twenty-first century has begun without the likes of a new Hemingway or Poe, but rather with those like Suzanna Moore or Jeffrey Eugenides who explore the psyche of the modern day female. They are among the more talented writers, but their work suffers due to the era in which they write. Their works of course sit among the less literary, but popular works, that make the life of a twenty-first century critic quite challenging. It was with the end of the New Criticism came the opening of the door which allowed for poor workmanship, less quality but works that could be carried around by the masses. Indeed, novels have changed and Stephen King was perhaps the first to equate his works with a Big Mac. Yes, many of the new works are created in such a standardized, predictable fashion, and it is plausible that the mediocrity of contemporary literature is attributable to the demise of the New Criticism. Since the 1960s, the end of the New Criticism has created areas for a variety of critical practices. Before exploring those, and just why literary quality has all but vanished from the world, a look at the rise and fall of the New Criticism is rather appropriate. A set of practices called the New Criticism was once the primary theory utilized in departments of literature throughout American academia (Clausen 54). Its popularity was at its height in the 1950s, but since that time, the New Criticism has become a symbol of all the things that were wrong with American life during those benighted years (54).
