how the tales go. They are classic stories of despair and hope, of fear and courage, and of triumph over all. In thinking about fairy tales, we can almost see the essence of such dreamy content in many many different novels throughout time. One in particular, "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte, is perhaps one of the most obvious in relationship to its fairy tale content. In examining this reality we discuss the classic novel in relationship with the classic fairy tales Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Little Red Riding Hood. To begin with, the fairy tales in question, much like all fairy tales, have a great deal of turmoil and conflict going on in them. But they all have a similar ending which essentially states, "And they lived happily ever after." If nothing else, this is surely one aspect of the relationship that exists between "Jane Eyre" and the fairy tales under examination. Jane is a young woman who lives through a great deal of self-doubt, life threatening circumstances, and many other life experiences. She finds herself in the pits of despair, living a lonely life, and she finds herself looking for hope. Jane is the epitome of all the women in any fairy tale. Yet, despite it all, she ends up living "happily ever after." She gives the plain, abused, disregarded young girls something to look up to in their dreams of a fairy tale world. She finds her prince, she loses her prince, but true love reigns and she is stronger and happier because of all the events in the story.
