finest American novel ever written. It retains its power because it is a sort of dual effort: it praises the American Dream and condemns it at the same time. This
paper argues a somewhat different point: that Fitzgerald was interested in exploring the failure of Jay Gatsby himself, not the failure of the American Dream. It also considers what happens
to Gatsbys version of the American Dream. Discussion The American Dream is the idea that if a person works hard and plays by the rules, he or she can achieve
great success. Success in America is usually defined as having a lot of money and a position of great power; obviously, one need only look around to see that this
dream cannot - and has not - come true for millions who have pursued it. But at an even deeper level, the American Dream is supposed to make the people
who pursue it happy. If money makes them happy, they will have money; if power makes them happy, they will be powerful, and so on. But Gatsby, while he has
money, is still unhappy. For him, then, the American Dream has failed at its deepest level. Gatsby is rich: he has a huge mansion and throws lavish parties for people
who come to them to freeload and dont even know who he is. But he feeds them all, lets them drink his liquor and roam around his house. The picture
