about gun control in todays environment. The Obama administration has a clear agenda when it comes to taking firearms out of the hands of American citizens. Although Obama
stated numerous times during his campaign for office that he was not against law abiding citizens having guns, just weeks after his appointment to office Attorney General Eric Holder announced
not just the intent to reinstate the assault weapon ban but also to impose additional restrictions on gun ownership in the US. Interestingly, according to the Attorney General at
least, the justification for these changes lies not here but in Mexico! Because Mexicans are killing one another left and right in their illegal drug dealings and because some
of the weapons used in those killings were *illegally* purchased in the United States, the Obama Administration feels that tighter gun control laws are needed in this country (NRA-IRL, 2009).
The problem with such justification, of course, is that it is missing the big point. That point is that criminals, whether they are Mexican or American, are going
to obtain guns when they want to obtain them. All stricter laws do is burden the law abiding citizen. History reiterates this fact time and time again.
Gun control attempts through legislation have been a miserable failure in their efforts to control and reduce homicides due to gun use. Anti-gun
proponents, with the sympathy and reinforcement of a liberal press corps, however, have continually ignored and altered facts in an effort to further their agendas of ridding law abiding citizens
of their firearms. Removing guns from the hands of the law abiding citizen is not the right approach to reducing incidents of homicide or even crime in general.
