Numerous theories have been purported in an attempt to explain human personality. Existentialist and humanistic theories
are among the more interesting of these. A comparison of the two presents the question of whether humans are unique or all drive in accordance with the same factors.
The philosophy of existentialism originated among late nineteenth century philosophers such as Keirkegaard and Nietzsche (Wartenburg, 2003). It was popularized after World
War II in a time when the turmoil that had been wreaked not just by that war but the preceding one had resulted in mass disillusionment (Wartenburg, 2003). People
were appalled by the senseless violence of the war. They were disadvantaged, however, in their understanding of themselves and humanity in general. Science had become their measuring sticks
and spiritual faith had largely gone out the door. Some even began to discount the existence of God. Jean Paul
Sartre, his lover Simone de Beauvoir were among the more infamous of those that discounted God and mankinds divine creation. Both were atheists and both contended that, in essence,
