Chrysostom affected Christian ritual, but also the manner in which his emphasis on material reality helped to define the role of the wealthy within the ancient church, and establish charity
as one of the hallmarks of the faith. This paper analyses the "Instructions" with both of these contexts in mind. John Chrysostom is undoubtedly one of the
most famous figures in the history of the Christian church. One of the four original "fathers of the church", Chrysostoms role in the development of Catholicism was to define and
refine ritual and tradition and ceremony through the use of his writing. Nowhere is this more evident than in his "Baptismal Instructions". This collection of eight sermons fulfills a variety
of interesting purposes. Firstly, it informs the ritual of baptism which is central to the Christian faith. Secondly, it highlights Chrysostoms capacity for emphasizing the material reality of worship by
