give the reader a mental picture of the events. One of these symbols is the billboard that advertises Dr. T.J. Eckleburg and his optometric services. This paper discusses the doctors
eyes. Discussion The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg are on a billboard that overlooks a long stretch of ash heaps (industrial waste) about half way between New York City and
West Egg, a village on Long Island. Fitzgerald describes the area as a "valley of ashes" and says that the road in the area runs close to the railroad
"so as to shrink away" from the desolate area (Fitzgerald 23). He describes a line of "ash-gray men" who work here, presumably shoveling ashes out of the "gray cars" that
come in on an "invisible track" to this dump (Fitzgerald 23). But above the ashes and through the "spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after
a moment, the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg" (Fitzgerald 23). The eyes are on a billboard and are "blue and gigantic" with retinas a yard high (Fitzgerald). There is
no face, instead, the eyes are behind an enormous pair of glasses which are sitting on a non-existent nose (Fitzgerald). Nick, whos narrating the book, speculates that the billboard was
put there by some "wild wag of an oculist" to "fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal blindness, or forgot them and
moved away" (Fitzgerald 23). Although Eckleburg remains a mystery-we never see him and only the sign reminds us that such a person once existed-the billboard remains, standing year after year,
