provides real insight into human emotion and psychological truth. This paper considers three of Carvers stories, "Fever," "Cathedral," and "The Bridle," and the lessons that the characters learn from the
circumstances of their lives. Discussion Life is hard for Carvers characters; they are bludgeoned by circumstances until they make some sort of basic realization, at which time there is a
turning point that offers some sort of resolution, or at least the hope that the present difficulties will end. The path that these characters follow is a hard one. In
"Fever," Mr. Carlyles wife Eileen walks out on him and their two children with no warning. An artist, she apparently feels unfulfilled in her marriage and leaves, she says, because
she has to feel she is "going for it" (Carver 165). Because Carlyle was unaware of her feelings, he assumed everything was fine; he is thus dealing with shock, hurt
and disbelief, but also with the crippling idea that she will soon be back (Carver). The couple is in a strange position-they are not officially separated, they are not planning
a divorce, but theyre not together. It is this uncertainty that leads Carlyle to hope Eileen will return, and for weeks he lives in this sort of limbo (Carver). He
seems to be dealing with it, but he knows how hard it is on the children, who are crying themselves to sleep every night (Carver).
The realization comes when Carlyle hires Mrs. Webster as a babysitter/housekeeper. An old woman with a decent work ethic, she walks into the house and immediately bonds with
the children. When that happens, its as though a weight has been lifted from all of them. First, the children have transferred their affections for Eileen to Mrs. Webster, which
