art as the expression of the will (to communicate). We will be looking for clues to our answer in the works of Trakl. Kandinsky and Lukacs. Georg Trakl (1887 -
1914) Poet The thematic approach to Trakls work could be viewed as belief in the natural cycle of experience from animal to plant matter: death, decay, rebirth/transcendence, --the constant repeat
affirming the life process. However although he may have written of that cycle, we have the sense that this poet was transfixed to the point of being immobile, by
the death and decay component, rather than seeing it as simply a step in the creative process. When speaking of immobility in this sense, we are looking at the
ability to move on, or to move forward. I am suggesting that his preoccupation with death and decay, clouded or immobilized his vision, to see the parts of
a whole, rather the parts of that process loomed disproportionately in front of him. It would seem that Trakl used the art of poetry as an expression of
will - in other words, his need to communicate was so strong that only poetry could accomplish the task. Listen to the first stanza of the poem,
