first "discovered" by European settlers, although thriving communities of Native Americans were flourishing already. The exploration that ensued by these European settlers brought forth much development and the eventual
settlements that would later become towns and cities. Eventually, the European influence was pervasive throughout Arkansas, as it was throughout the United States.
De Soto is credited as being among the first of the European explorers to visit the territory in the mid-16th century. It is interesting to
note that when De Soto arrived in 1541, there were a great many Native Americans in residence, numbering in the tens of thousands (Making A State). As the Europeans
explored Arkansas, they found artifacts that provided evidence of life in the region dating back to about 9500 B.C. (Making A State). But it was Frenchman, Henri de Tonti who
founded the first permanent white settlement in 1686 (The Exploration and Colonization of Arkansas). It was known as the Arkansas Post, and this was the first European settlement on
the lower Mississippi (Making a State). It was in 1803 that Arkansas became part of the United States through the
Louisiana Purchase (The Exploration and Colonization of Arkansas). This area though was actually part of Missouri, but became the separate entity that we know today in 1819, after the
first wave of settler arrived (The Exploration and Colonization of Arkansas). Many of the Native American villages that had been
