been observed in economic activity in the last few decades. In "The Experience Economy" authors Joseph Pine and James Gilmore observe a decline in a goods-based economy and a
transition towards more of a service-based economy. Even more interestingly, however, they observe a trend towards more of what they refer to as an "experience-based economy". They warn:
"Those businesses that relegate themselves to the diminishing world of goods and services will be rendered
irrelevant. To avoid this fate, you must learn to stage a rich, compelling experience". Pine
and Gilmore (1999) do present several compelling points. Over the years there has definitely been an economic expansion in terms of the "products" that various companies offer for sale.
Long gone are the days when just hard tangible items classified as products. Today experts are available in every conceivable category offering their professional services. These services
are not just trade services like plumbing and mechanics, they are services in fields as diverse as alternative medicine and astrology! Information is becoming a big component of the
economic market as well. While at one time the consumer was dependent on information that was available within a set geographic area, today the consumer can buy information in
the form of books or in the form of computerized information systems and from any location around the world! Information is indeed an important part of the marketplace
evolution. Pine and Gilmore identify and even more intriguing development in economic evolution, however, than those noted above. That development
