is stipulated that the two sisters must make the decision jointly. Melinda contends that there is more to the world than humans understand so pulling the plug on Matthew would be wrong. Melissa is more practical, or down to Earth and sees the only practical thing to do is to allow their brother to die. While each is adamant in their positions, Melissa is willing to hear Melinda out, only she wants evidence that the soul exists. Melinda tries to convince Melissa that a soul exists but that proves rather difficult. In Meditation II Descartes tries to prove that there is a soul that is independent of the body and that one can acquire knowledge this way. Melinda can use Descartes meditation to make her point. Descartes wrote in "Synopsis to the Meditations" that the purpose of the meditations is not to prove what they establish, but rather to show how the world of physics could be mapped reliably and independent of the usually vague and misleading deliverance of sensory organs (Honderich 189). In other words, rather than begin in the philosophical realm, philosophy proves what science cannot. It goes beyond science in a sense and it goes beyond what can be seen or proven. While Melissa could surely use the argument in her defense as if the body is separate from the soul, what would it matter anyway whether her brother lives or dies, the problem that Melinda brings up is the unknown. Melinda is not so sure, seeing the world as something bigger than she can perceive.
