Essay / Research Paper Abstract

This is a 10 page paper presenting an argument about the existence of God from an atheist and theist standpoint ending in favor of the theist. Generally the arguments for the existence of God center on five different approaches: the argument of contingency, the argument from design, the ontological argument, the argument as a presupposition of values and morals, and the argument for proof by religious experience. The argument of design of the universe, or teleological arguments based on science are those most often proposed by atheists (A) although theists (T) do have comparable arguments as rebuttal and the arguments of morals and values provide the most sound base. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

The argument of design of the universe, or teleological arguments based on science are those most often proposed by atheists (A) although theists (T) do have comparable arguments as rebuttal and the arguments of morals and values provide the most sound base. T: Saint Thomas Aquinas proposed one of the first cosmological arguments used by theists in regards to constant motion. From Aquinas perspective and within the theists arguments there are objects in the universe which are in motion and this factor is not denied by the atheists. However, Aquinas continues in his argument that whatever is in motion was put in motion by another and since all objects in motion are caused by another object, there must have been a larger force, God, who started the original motion (Allhoff, 2002). A: From an atheist standpoint, this theory of Aquinas proposed by the theists does not necessarily follow the modern theories of physics. In fact the laws of conservation and momentum state that "the total momentum of a system of particles remains constant when the resultant external force acting on the system is zero" and if the system is the universe there are no external forces and the universe can still maintain a constant momentum (Allhoff, 2002). If two objects simultaneously appear as seen happening with particles, given sufficient energies, the particle will create their own motion and conserve the momentum without the introduction of external forces. In other words, particles do not need a "push" by external forces in order to get them going and therefore the universe did not need ...
