Emily Manns "Execution of Justice" is a theatrical recap of the trial
of Supervisor Dan White who was ultimately convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the 1978 murder of liberal San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. Milk was the
first openly gay elected official in the United States and he would become the target of White who felt that he was being unjustly discriminated against in the workplace and
Milk was being favored. Manns play comes alive because of its accurate depiction of the type of abhorrent acts which have come to be an unfortunately common aspect of
American culture in the last twenty-five years. Mann incorporates actual trial testimony into her play to rivet her audience to their seats as she breaths life into a diversity
of issues of social, racial, cultural, sexual, and economic inequality which so consistently interlace with contemporary American life. Although Manns approach in "Execution
of Justice" has been said by some critics to be "choppy and disjointed" (Association for Theater in Higher Education, 2002), it is an interesting portrayal of the injustices which exist
in American culture and, in particular, our justice system. The play is classified as counter-conventional in that it provides a stark portrayal of a justice system that is questionable
in moral validity (Association for Theater in Higher Education, 2002). Conventional plays, on the other hand, support the conventional justice system structure (Association for Theater in Higher Education,
2002). The counter-conventional approach presented in "Execution of Justice" is, therefore, on the opposite pole from that presented in more common theatrical productions which, in effect, lend support
