death, which has now been ruled a homicide, stunned the world and resulted in massive news coverage that led every broadcast. Some outlets returned to relatively normal news coverage but
many others have continued to follow the story obsessively. The TV Guide Channel, for example, which provides an on-screen guide to programming, has run the same "specials" about Michael Jackson
almost without let up since June. Very little if any new information has been revealed in that time, yet the programs continue to run. Why? And is this a good
thing? The two answers are connected and simply put are as follows: the coverage is extensive because its lazy reporting and no, its not a good thing. American popular culture,
for better or worse, has been exported to the rest of the world, which accounts for the global hysteria over Jacksons death among his fans (Rutten, 2009). The medias preoccupation
with the event is more difficult to explain, and that preoccupation has crowded legitimate news off the air (Rutten, 2009). During the time that reporters chased after tidbits on the
Jackson funeral and fans reactions, Iran tightened its grip on its citizens; President Obama and the Iranian leaders exchanged heated words; North Korea continued its descent into instability; the House
passed "major legislation on climate change" and California continued to flounder into bankruptcy (Rutten, 2009). All of these events are significant and could even pose threats to human life, but
