role of pharmacist in our contemporary environment is evolving on a daily basis. Today pharmacists are aggressively seeking to increase the role that they play in counseling patients and
even in providing clinical services. Pharmacists are even beginning to seek prescriptive authority. This shift is, in fact, a needed one. Pharmacists are much more versed in
drugs and potential drug interaction than are physicians! Interestingly, pharmacists have had the authority to write prescriptions for some time in the Indian Health Bureau and the Veterans Administration
Hospital System (NYSCHP, 2004). This has been a privilege which has made them an even more integral part of the overall health care system of these agencies. Unfortunately,
the attempts of pharmacists to move into the mainstream of patient/health care professional interaction outside of these two agencies have been perceived by physicians as an infringement into an area
in which doctors have previously held an almost uncontested monopoly. To understand the evolving role of the pharmacist in our contemporary
environment we must recognize that todays health care environment is a quickly changing arena. The move toward managed care, however, has been favorable to increased privileges for pharmacists.
This trend towards increased privileges are certainly understandable given that: "Pharmacists are highly respected members
of the community, ranking in the eyes of the public with doctors, clergymen, and teachers. They are important members of the healthcare team" (Craig, 1997).
