In assessing the evolution of Californias position within the nation, from the period of the American conquest until the present, one sees a multitude of changes. Today, California is considered
"hot," lingo used to describe the hip, urban state that appears to set trends more than any other state in the union, including New York. Largely due to the existence
of Hollywood, and Americas love affair with the superstar, California seems to shine above the rest of the states. While this is true to a large extent, and certainly pop
culture is dependent on the goings on in Californias large cities, the state is not generally adored by the rest of the nation. California--often referred to as "the left
coast" by conservatives to denote its liberal nature-- is seen as being on the same level as the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. Unlike the more conservative South and somewhat mainstream
Northwest, California is not discussed in terms of its Western appeal. Rather, California is an entity all its own. Like Florida, a state that many do not equate as being
a part of the South, California has its own unique nature, both politically and culturally. In examining the shifts that the state has been through since it became a part
of the United States of America, one can see that extraordinary changes are in its history. II. History of California It was during the middle of the
nineteenth century that California went from "obscurity to statehood" which is primarily attributable to the 1849 Gold Rush ("California History" PG). While California was a part of the United States
