the effect of this change in the American Civil War. Discussion The "anchor" of this paper is the 1993 movie Gettysburg, an intense and moving account of the battle. The movie, backed by Ted Turner, is a detailed account of the three-day struggle that changed the course of the war. Because it is so focused on such a short period of time, we learn a great deal about the conflict, and one of the things that is brought out is the incredible killing power of the weapons. That in turn leads to the observation that the Civil War is a good starting point for a consideration of weaponry, because many historians have called it the first modern war. A number of references have been made to the fact that by the time the war began, weapons were ahead of tactics. Shelby Foote, a noted historian, said in a interview on the DVD that the casualty figures were so high in this war because "they believed that in order to mass your fire you had to mass your men" (Esparza & Maxwell, 1993). The result was that troops advanced shoulder to shoulder into withering fire that tore them to shreds. Rifles had evolved; tactics had not. The rifle takes its name from the spiral grooves inside the barrel: this is called "rifling" and is designed to make the bullet spin; it is believed that the first rifling appeared in the "late 15th and early 16th centuries, though the "earliest written description of a spiral rifled firearm is found in an inventory of firearms from Turin, Italy, dated 1478" (History of the rifle).
