level of connectedness. It may be argued that the first milestone in the development of social networking was the in the 1970s with the development of the bulletin board

This like many other social networking elements was developed by a user on a non commercial basis. This was a key stage as it created an integrated approach as well
as lead to the use of uniform protocols. It is not until 1997, after the web has been developed and well established, which also lead to a gradual decline
of BBSs that the first social networking site that meets the criteria of Boyd and Ellison (2007) was launched, SixDegrees.com as well as being web based met the 3 criteria
of allowing users to create public or semi public profiles, to create a list of users (friends) where there was a shared connections and view the web pages of others
