The creation of the United States was based on the precept of equality for all. True equality,
however, has yet to be achieved in American society. Indeed, the thesis can be presented that:
our commitment to political equality exists alongside deep and persistent social inequalities, in particular inequalities of gender, race, and class.
These inequalities are rooted deep within our history. They extend, in fact, all the way back to the years before
the American Revolution. It was only with the pronouncement of our independence, however, that these continued inequalities became most vividly contrasted against the very principles for which our new
country stood. Our Declaration of Independence declared: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." -- The Declaration of Independence
Despite these inspiring words, the battle towards equality was only just beginning in these first years of
our history. This was especially true in regard to women, African Americans, and Native Americans. Many of the issues surrounding issues of inequality after the American Revolution involved
