economic, educational and social equality. This essay presents a brief history of womens rights and feminism. The issues that were the focal points in the different movements are discusses. The
essay also comments on mens groups that emerged as a result of the feminist movement. Some supported womens rights, others argued both men and women were oppressed in the society.
These groups are not very strong and some have even died out. The issue of mens rights is evidenced primarily in terms of the rights of fathers. There have been
considerable changes in this arena, with more men receiving custody of their children, or at least, equal custody. History of Womens Rights and Feminism Feminism is broadly defined
as "both an intellectual commitment and a political movement" (Haslanger and Tuana, 2004), the purpose of which is to end "sexism in all forms" (Haslanger and Tuana, 2004). The challenge
in discussing this topic is that numerous types of feminism have evolved over the decades (Haslanger and Tuana, 2004). Another challenge is that different feminist writings do not agree on
exactly what sexism is, where it exists and what to do to eliminate it (Haslanger and Tuana, 2004). We can confidently say that it has to do with social justice
in terms of political and economic equality. We can also say that political feminism officially began with the suffragette movement, which means there have been a number of feminist movements
throughout history. Women activist leaders in the late 19th century incorporated Darwins evolution theory into their arguments (Deutscher, 2004). Charlotte Perkins Gilman, for instance, wrote that "practically the entire range
