One author notes that "The decade that was marked by the end of the Cold War and the break-up of the Soviet Union has been followed in the Baltic region
by an economic renaissance, as new trading links are forged. These developments have been described as the biggest and most promising piece of the New Europe" (Fertilizer International, 2000; 30).
Add to this the fact that these Baltic states are being offered, or have been offered and thus entered into, membership in the European Union and we have some very
complex issues. There are many who feel that membership in the European Union would only put the Baltic states back in a form of control not unlike that seen
by the Soviet empire. Others argue that membership in the EU would prove even more beneficial to the newly developing regions. Whatever the case it is clear that the issues
are complex and the future likely fragile. With these issues in mind the following paper examines the European Union and the Baltic States, discussing the relevant issues and examining the
best method of integration between the EU and the Baltic states. The European Union and the Baltic States One individual who is strongly against the Baltic states involvement
in the European Union "complains that over 10 of 15 current EU governments are socialist-oriented. He said its one of the reasons the EU has pressed Estonia to abandon its
ultra low-regulation, low-tax policies" He states that in order to qualify for entry into the EU the region will "have to ditch the liberal market system thats made us so
successful.....Many businessmen express the same fear...Food prices, he adds for good measure, will rise by at least 10 percent if Estonia enters the EU" (Tarm, 2003). However, at the
