area of the Etruscan Civilization was Etruria. It was located in what are now Tuscany as well as a part of Umbria. The territory was to the northwest
of the Tiber River (Anonymous 110-113). There are several theories as to the origin of the Etruscans. Other people of the ancient Italian peninsula
included the Picenes, the Villanovans, and the Umbrians. The Etruscans had a culture and language that was unlike those other people. Because of this, some suggest that the
Etruscans migrated from Lydia to Italy. Others suggest that the Etruscans are just different from other Italians, but indigenous to Italy, nonetheless. The next theory has been largely
disputed. It is that the Etruscans came through the Alpines from the north (Anonymous 110-113). Although the Etruscan civilization has questionable origins, does not
take away from the fact that it existed several centuries ago. "...a distinctive Etruscan culture evolved about the 8th century, developed rapidly during the 7th century, achieved its peak
of power and wealth during the 6th century, and declined during the 5th and 4th centuries" (110). There was no central government in Etruria. The civilization was comprised
of city-states. Perusia, Volsinnii, Caere, Veii, Tarquinii, and Clusium were important (Anonymous 110-113). At one time, the Etruscans maintained maritime power.
Colonies were established on the coast of Spain, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, and Elba. Carthage and Etruria were once allies against the Greeks. After a time, Carthage
