This in turn translates to a growing trend of globalization, wherein international business is rapidly becoming the norm. The impacts of such changes have been the object of much scholarly discourse and criticism. Much has been written, for instances, on the topic of various industries such as diamonds and textiles which have been positively exploitative in their treatment of international communities, sometimes committing ethical violations in the quest for greater profits. However, as once delves deeper into the true consequences of 21st century globalism, it becomes rapidly apparent that it is not merely heavy industries which have the capacity to be exploitative of international communities, or to exert a negative impact on the world at large through short-sighted financial practices. Indeed, outside of the traditional auspices of industry, an analysis of the futures market reveals how certain types of deregulated financial instruments are having a catastrophic impact that is being felt globally. Speculative and short-trading of agricultural futures, for example, is largely credited with driving up the price of food staples around the globe, and potentially plunging many into starvation and poverty. This paper will analyze the extent to which this is true, whether or not deregulation of the commodities market is responsible, and the overall ethics of the situation.
