Theological Issues Human tendency is to consider those that differ from us as somehow inferior. Our world, however, consists not just
of a diversity of races but a diversity of cultures. Many unfortunate events have unfolded between those races and cultures because of one perceiving the other as inferior.
Medical experimentation is one of the most disturbing results of these types of perceptions. When religion enters the picture perception of
inferiority can be tremendously devastating. Jews are just one example of a religious group that has been persecuted in atrocious ways because of their religion. The horrors that
unfolded in World World II are just one example of that persecution. Medical experimentation on Jews by Nazi doctors included many painful and often lethal procedures that would have
not even been considered for application among those the German doctors considered their peers. This occurred because of a perceived hierarchy of humanity, a hierarchy in which one being is
superior to the other and is thus theologically permitted to use the other at will for whatever purpose one sees fit. This same view, of course, has been used
even more extensively to excuse our use of animals in medical experimentation. While this has been explained by some as a Christian perception of hierarchy, in reality Christian ethics
operate on the principle of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (Townsend, 2002, 56). Even the the natural law theory holds that we must
simply "do good and avoid evil" (Townsend, 2002, 56). In short, the ethical principles that most often concern the health care environment revolve around concepts such as autonomy, beneficence,
