century heralded many changes in China. Business has been one of the more visible facets of this evolution. Chinese business has evolved tremendously in regard to the political
and economic principles which were touted earlier in Chinas history, principles encapsulated by the great Mao paradox. In many ways the traditions of the past continue to exert a
tremendous influence on the way business is conducted. "Guanxi" is one of those traditions. Guanxi is defined by Dunfee and
Warren (2001) as a "cultural phenomenon" consisting of networking, interpersonal connections, and in general relationships between people around which business transactions are often formulated in China. Guanxi is the
product of a system of obligations and favors that radiate out on the basis of kinship and social connection (Dunfee and Warren, 2006). Ebenkamp (2006) regards guanxi as:
"a special personal relationship between two people in which long-term mutual benefit is more important than
short-term individual gain" Some trace the origin of guanxi to the time of Mao, to
the time when being able to call in a few personal favors might mean the difference between eating or not (Ebenkamp, 2006). In reality guanxi can be traced much
earlier into Chinese history. It evolved in a rigidly hierarchal society where the differences between the top hierarchy and the lower were extreme (Ebenkamp, 2006). Today guanxi can be
