Ebay in fact is used by many shoppers as an alternative to ordinary shopping (Totty, 2001). Further, Ebay has the advantage of providing consumers with hard to find items. When
a book is out of print, or a technical gadget is no longer being stocked in stores, Ebay provides the consumer with worldwide access to sellers who might have just
what an individual is looking for. In the past, people would be hesitant to buy or sell to strangers, and in fact, when the founder looked
for venture capital, few investors thought it was a good idea (Pitta, 2003). Over time, the website grew and now, people love to shop for bargains and hard to find
merchandize on this site they now trust. Not all has been rosy however. There had been a backlash against the firm when consumers said that the industry giant went "corporate"
(Pitta, 2003). The protesters also "accused the company of high-handed decisions like a gun-sale ban. For a little more than six months, listings remained flat" (Pitta, 2003, p.18). Yet, were
the so called high handed decisions moral ones, or was the firm truly impeding on individual rights? A look at the ethical dilemmas this company faces may help to shed
some light on that answer. II. The Ethical Dilemma As already noted there are some ethical dilemmas as it concerns Ebay. While the restriction of merchandize is
one thing, there are other issues. It is now a public company, so it is under greater pressure to profit (Pitta, 2003). This might cause the firm to make poor
