titled Age Rationing and the Just Distribution of Health Care: Is There a Duty to Die?, she indicates that as far back as the fifth century, B.C., Euripides noted how he hates "men who would prolong their lives/ By foods and drinks and charms of magic art....They ought, when they no longer serve the land/ To quit this life, and clear the way for youth" (Battin, 1994; 58). Battin indicates that today this is a controversy wherein many people believe that if elderly people are ill, in an irreversible way, they should not be given treatment any longer and their lives should end because ultimately they do have a "duty to die" (Battin, 1994; 58). The entire essay speaks of how society today is having a hard time with this dilemma and from an ethical perspective one can see this in many different ways. For example, some may argue that ethically everyone should be kept alive, that no one has the right to expect another person to die and that since the society has the technology to keep many people alive, longer than ever possible before, people should continue to be given whatever sustenance needed to keep their lives going. From the perspective of ethically believing everyone has the right to live if it is possible, one could well argue that it is never anyones duty to die. Battins essay, however, speaks of the history of humanity, and the different cultures around the world that all but expect the elderly to give up their lives at a certain point.
