Petroleum which are generally perceived as corporate entities with little social or ethical conscience, but in recent years there have been shifts in the attitudes of BP.
There are different approaches that may be adopted depending on an individuals perspective, at the basic end of the spectrum a firm is deemed to be owned by the
shareholders, and under Friedmans model of shareholder wealth maximization. Under this approach the business ahs only one responsibility; the shareholder and increasing their wealth (Chyssides and Kaler, 1998; 230). This
is not with total disregard to ethical issues, as a firm has to comply with legislation and where certain behaviour standards are required by the customers these should also be
complied with as to fail would be to loose potential business. However, this may be argued as an over simplification of the way ethics are viewed
in the Commercial environment, with corporation often in a position of strength it can be postulated that they should have a boarder responsibility, as put forward in models such
as that of the shareholder wealth maximization model, where the needs and responsibility to numerous stakeholders are recognised as a valid approach (Stonehill and Dullum, 1990; 34). When looking at
BP the general approach as well as specific issues needs to be considered and looked at in the context of ethical theories looking at a deeper level that simple cooperate
governance approaches. It is not only the actions of the past that can be considered, it is also possible to look at the political actions of the firm to determine
