life. Discussion The first thing that must be pointed out, of course, is that taking moral and ethical lessons from the Pope will probably have a great deal of appeal
for Roman Catholics, but little or none for those of other faiths. Women in particular are still faced with the age-old teaching that their primary purpose is to bear children
and the proscription against family planning still stands, even when families are living in grinding poverty. The scandals about homosexual and/or predatory priests continue to wrack the Church, calling into
question its policies of covering up these criminal acts and transferring the priests to other parishes, rather than defrocking them and getting them the help they need. In short, the
reputation of the Catholic Church is in tatters, and many people, including a good many Catholics, are not going to be impressed by the Popes thinking, no matter how personable
he may be. That said, however, it must also be acknowledged that one of the hallmarks of the Catholic Church is its continual study of philosophy; it is a Church
that asks questions, even when the answers may be difficult to accept. The members of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) are renowned for their abilities and their skepticism, and
they encourage people to question everything. Catholic social thinking "is entirely rooted in biblical sources. It begins with the affirmation Jesus Christ is Lord! and it sets forth Jesus as
the image through whom and with whom and in whom the destiny of humankind is best revealed (Novak x). Evangelical non-Catholic Christians will understand this, but they become uneasy when
