The controversy over the federal funding of stem cell research is outlined in an article titled "Stem-Cell Research Since ICOF last covered stem-cell research in March 2005".
This article reviews the literature on stem cell research and tries to concisely outline the problems that have presented themselves in terms of federal funding. George W. Bush
opposed federally funded stem cell research and limited it to only occur using stem cells that had already been harvested. Although Congress has tried to sidestep Bushs limitations they
have been unsuccessful. Furthermore, this article contends that those stem cells that are eligible for use in federally funded projects are contaminated. This effectively eliminates federal funded stem
cell research. Fortunately, numerous states and private investors have jumped on the bandwagon and have established their own programs for stem
cell research. The article, however, contends that this results in "non-uniform research standards and scientific results". The lack of federal funding is disturbing to say the least.
This is particularly true given the long list of diseases this article contends are subject to cure if stem cell research could continue.
