Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 8-page paper that examines the industrial process of deinking that has conventionally been used to recycle old newspapers in order to reuse their fiber content. Discussed are the environmental hazards created by the interaction of chemicals during the deinking process and the harmful effect these chemicals can have on both animals and humans. Included are measures that have been taken during the last decade to mitigate these hazards by producing cleaner and safer deinking methods. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

feet from his grandmothers house on the Bad River Chippewa Reservation near Ashland, Wisconsin (Benton PG). Although he and his companions knew that the chunks of wadded paper-like material
came from the American Can paper mill located near the reservation, it was not until much later that Bill Kolodziejski came to know the strange substance as sludge, a waste
product of a chemical process known as deinking. And it was only after his grandmothers death in 1991 that he came to realize that the "paper rocks" he had
thrown at his childhood friends, and their accompanying elements, had the potential to kill (PG). When Kolodziejskis grandmother, Mrs. Louis Lemieux, was diagnosed with a type of liver cirrhosis known
to be chemically induced, her doctors were curious as to how the Indian woman, a nondrinker, had contracted a disease usually associated with alcohol abuse. Their inquiries led to
an investigation of the sludge pit located just outside Mrs. Lemieuxs house and adjacent to her water well. Subsequent testing of the well found that the sludge deposited by
the American Can mill throughout a twenty-year period from the early 1960s until the early 1980s had seeped into the well and poisoned Mrs. Lemieuxs water supply with a total
of eighteen heavy metals and poisonous toxins (Benton PG). Of the Environmental Protection Agencys long list of serious illnesses that can result to exposure to these toxins, chemically induced cirrhosis
of the liver was among the most primary (PG). The full-scale outrage and investigation that commenced in the mid-1990s on Wisconsins Bad River Reservation was only one example of the
movement toward awareness of the dangers of paper deinking processes that began during this era. As public awareness and outrage increased, changes in both paper manufacturing and recycling techniques
