have broad reaching impacts, including problems with water quality, problems with long-term land use, and can result in the production of unwanted byproducts, including mercury consolidation and toxic runoff.
For small countries like Trinidad and Tobago, which has limited land mass that can be allocated to waste management, the impacts of poor waste management can be devastating.
At present, poor waste management has led to issues of industrial and household waste runoff, the toxification of the nations rivers, and an increased cost, both environmental and economic, of
clean-up. Trinidad and Tobago, which relies heavily both on oil production and tourism as their central business operations, must also consider the social impacts of improper waste management practices.
In recent years, the focus on improper waste management systems and the environmental impacts for Trinidad and Tobago and for surrounding environmental regions has led to a call for
greater restrictions and the implementation of containment and recycling plans. Fro the long=term economic and environmental survival of Trinidad and Tobago, it will be necessary to put into place
structures that support appropriate waste management. There is no way that the country can continue to ignore the problems they are facing as a result of ineffective waste management
systems. It is imperative that the focus of new development and industrialization in Trinidad and Tobago reflect concern for waste management systems. Trinidad and Tobago Trinidad and Tobago
