man. For the most part the Enlightenment era focused on the intelligence and reason of man, arguing that such focus could answer many, if not all, of lifes questions. With
the Romantic era, however, the focus was more on the way the world worked in a natural and mysterious manner, arguing that many things could not be understood through reason
but must be merely accepted, admired, and respected. The following paper presents an examination of the two periods through a discussion of works from the time periods. The paper first
discusses the Enlightenment era through an examination of Alexander Popes "An Essay on Man: Epistle 1." The second portion of the paper discusses Blakes poem "Tyger" and Wordsworths poem "Lines
Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey." Through a discussion of the two periods it will become clear that the Enlightenment era was one that relied greatly on attitude and/or
a method of thought, which contrasted with the ideologies of the Romantic period, in which authors were more concerned with nature and their natural surroundings. Enlightenment According to one
critic, "Awakening and daylight in Popes, "Essay on Man" are common images throughout the epistle, which are symbolic of reason and enlightenment. The text suggests that waking and daylight are
most conducive to logical thought. Popes analysis of mans position in the chain of being leads him to the conclusion that reason is the defining characteristic in man, and that
