Introduction The period of western civilization that we typically refer to as the Enlightenment spanned the eighteenth century.
This was a time period where the contact between people of different cultures was becoming more and more frequent. One result of this increased contact was the rapid
transmission of ideas and philosophies. The transmission of ideas was not just informal but formal as well. In many cases certain individuals, in fact, took it upon themselves
to help this spread of ideas. They went about accomplishing that in sometimes methodical ways. As a consequence, the world began to change in a number of sometimes
radical ways. Among the more obvious results of the Enlightened philosophies were the French and American revolutions.
Discussion The Enlightenment had tremendous scientific, social, economic, agricultural, intellectual, and political impacts around the world. A
significant period of European expansion was already underway. The European entry into the so-called "New World" represents, in fact, just one aspect of that expansion. The Americas, however,
represented a new world, a world where the people wouldnt be content for very long with the same old constraints that they had struggled under in the old world.
