is complex to say the least. There are as many sides to the issue as there are individuals themselves. Emotions run high when considering it yet it is
important as well to maintain a sense of practicality and logic as well. The intent of this paper is to compare and contrast both sides of the issue.
Particularly in the 1980s, a diversity of groups jumped on the bandwagon to make English the official language of the
US. The group English First is just one example of a grassroots groups that was quite successful in this quest (Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research). Numerous states
implemented English Only laws thanks to strong lobbying efforts of groups like this (Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research). The impacts were far reaching to say the least. California,
for example, implemented Proposition 227 in June 1998 to ban many bilingual programs (Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research). Other states, however, managed to resist such lobbying. Utah
is an example of one state that not only resisted implemented such laws but that spoke out against the injustices such laws represented (Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research).
Not surprisingly, the English Only issue has been in the court system on more than one occasion. In Arizona, for example, Art. XXVIII if
the states constitution (an article originally passed by unanimous vote in 1988) once severely restricted the access that those that did not have good English proficiency had to the Courts
(Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research). Recently, however, that Article was deleted from the constitution because it was found to be in violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to
