was colonized by the British that Indias official language is English. However, this is not the case. The following paper examines the English language in India. The paper first discusses
how India came to speak English, and then discusses when and where English is used in India. Then other languages are examined, with a finishing section which discusses any features
that make the use of the English language in India unique. How India Came to Speak English Most people would generally assume that India first began to speak
English when India became colonized by the British. And, they would be correct in this assumption. India came under British rule and the British immediately began making very powerful changes
to the nation they had focused upon. One of these changes, and perhaps one of the first changes, involved language. One author notes that, "When the British started ruling India,
they searched for Indian mediators who could help them to administer India. The British turned to high caste Indians to work for them" and in so doing they were taught
the English language (Daniel). Many of the high caste Indians eagerly seemed to take to the language and to assisting the English. With the high caste taking so remarkably
to the English, it was felt perhaps, by many other less powerful classes, that also learning the language and adhering to the British rule could move them up in their
social status. And, as it relates to the British, we note that "The British policy was to create an Indian class who should think like the British, or as it
