SA148Suf.rtf Much of Long Islands problems are related to transportation and the inability for people, particularly in Suffolk county, to get off of the island except by boat. In order to leave one has to go through Nassau county which is generally crowded. While enduring crowds may be simply an inconvenience, it affects a great many things. For example, prices on Long Island are higher due to the fact that everything has to be driven in or hauled in by boat. This goes for oil too and when there is an oil shortage, and high prices, Suffolk County gets hit hard. There are solutions to the problems that involve transportation and indirectly involve energy. Long Island has to be self-sufficient to some extent and while it has done well, utility costs for example are high. Suffolk Countys residents rely on septic tanks which makes things less than exemplary. In general, Suffolk Country has a unique problem related to its isolation and high cost of energy resources. There are solutions. In 2000, a New York City company had proposed the largest Long Island energy plant in existence, which would cost $400 million (Anastasi, 2000, p.1A). The proposed area is near LIEs Exit 66 (2000). The town of Brookhaven has authority over that particular site (2000). How did the proposal come up?
