the trade in their ivory was forbidden in 1989 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). There is still, however, a serious poaching problem because ivory
remains to be a highly sought after product. The implications of this illegal trade and the demand for it is discussed along with the organizations and groups that are
involved. SOME OF THE ORGANIZATIONS The Save the Elephants organization, based in Nairobi, said that "from 1979 to 1989, Africa lost over half its elephants to the ivory trade,
with Kenya losing 85 percent of its population (Harman, 10, 2001). According to this organization, surprisingly enough some of the worst abusers of the ivory trade are such people
as the diplomats, foreign travelers and United Nations officials. Because ivory is considered a great souvenir everyone seems to think that just one small purchase wont make a noticeable
dent in the problem. But of course, when this is multiplied times the number of people who want these souvenirs the trade in ivory is still made quite lucrative.
At the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) which meets every second or third year, the problem of the endangered elephants due
to the trade in ivory is always one of the main points of concern. With over one hundred and fifty states as members, some of which garner huge profits
