There are only six breeding locations left in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This paper will focus on how and why the population has begun to decline and the problem of genetic variability in some of the breeding populations which inevitably leads to problems within the species. ABOUT THE HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL Hawaiian monk seals are included in the order of marine mammals referred to as pinnipeds. This order of marine mammals also includes seals, sea lions and walruses. Monk seals are sometimes referred to as "living fossils" (Earth Trust PG, 2001) because they are the oldest living members of the pinniped order and they have remained virtually unchanged for fifteen million years. The irony here is that while the Hawaiian monk seals have remained on this earth virtually unchanged for fifteen million years, now they are included on the endangered species list. This species of living fossil might not be around much longer if action is not taken to try to preserve the remaining few that there are. As of this writing there are only one thousand to fifteen hundred Hawaiian monk seals in existence. The Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, is Hawaiis only pinniped.
