Trefil uses the analogy of a train arriving at a switchyard, to explore the many questions which confront us regarding this origin and inner working. Trefil points out that even at a railroad switchyard there are many unknowns. While we can see some of the switches, for example, there are many others that we cannot see. It is only for those that we can see we can accurately discern the future, i.e. accurately predict which direction a particular train will take. So too can we only predict the general direction our universe will take. There is, therefore, no definitive answer as to whether the universe will ultimately end in fire or ice, only speculation and opinion. When we consider a train switchyard, for those unseen switches we can only be certain of generalities. We know, for example, that a train will leave the station but we do now know precisely what route it will take to do so. Trefil (211) observes: "The unseen switches are true decision points in the future, and what happens when we arrive at them determines the entire subsequent course of events" Trefil recognizes that although we can see the "track" extending billions ...
