In Engelhardts The End of Victory
Culture, he puts forward the concept that the post-war era is in fact an era which has been referred to as ahistorical in the sense that the series of historical
landmarks, mostly connected with conflict of one sort or another, which mark all the preceding centuries seem to have come to an end, in many ways. Even though it is
certainly not the case that world peace has been achieved, from the point of view of western civilisation it is now necessary to take a different perspective on the way
that society is progressing. He notes
that, from the point of view of America in particular, many of the armed conflicts which mark the countrys progress were not wars under the terms of the constitution, but
even so they formed a means by which the nations ideology could be focused on a specific aim, the result of which would validate and confirm the public consciousness. In
other words, conflict has several specific social and cultural functions, especially in terms of the way that a nation defines itself.
For example, in pragmatic economic terms, conflict may result in the expansion of
