form of familial structure is even possible, even postulating that patriarchy is inevitable. Nevertheless, an examination of history reveals that other forms of familial association are possible, and have been
known to work quite well. These alternative patterns demonstrate that patriarchy need not be the only form of family employed by societies. An examination of some of these alternative
patterns and applicable feminist theory will demonstrate that from the legacy of patriarchy, new and revitalized family structures can emerge that are better suited for the modern day world then
the rather worn-out paradigm of patriarchy. First of all, to see where society is going, it is necessary to establish at an understanding of how family structure and patriarchy developed.
During the early evolution of the human race, the only recognized bond of relationship was with ones mother. Like all mammalian families, the primitive human family consisted of mother and

groups had a matrilineal structure, that is along female lines of descent, because the paternal role in creation was not understood, or even guess at, in many cases. Once
it was understood that men beget children, they wanted a great many children, because it was the best and easiest way to immortality. Ancestral mothers had been worshiped for countless
