As such, the public began spending money, causing various industries to take notice of such disposable income and look for ways to tap into this economic excess. "The 1870s through the 1920s illustrated a change in economic thought from production orientation to consumption, often called consumer capitalism. The focus of consumers became not what was needed but what was wanted because of the economic abundance, a philosophy encouraged by businesses through the advent of advertising that was to develop desires for new products regardless of what purpose they served" (Trotter, 1992, p. 27). The vicious cycle that exists within the framework of consumerism - the perpetual wanting of more and more materialistic tangibles until there is nothing left to appreciate - was soon born within the masses; however, consumerisms negative influence exemplified the ongoing quest for betterment through change that often did not occur. "Consumer capitalism began in the late 19th century with the opening of the first department stores and increased with the growth of advertising and retailing. Consumerism is an artificial appetite, and its values have replaced earlier religious and political ideals" (Lapham, 1993, p. 10). Modernity represented progress while consumerism symbolized materialistic gluttony; when brought together, one can easily understand how the union was to be a boon for the emergence of mass advertising.
