that the military is taking advantage of them by integrating them into the military. In reflecting on Rhodes (2007) article, it seems that one fear is that the scientists will
somewhat compromise the science. That is actually a very small part of the piece. What is also reported are fears that the anthropologists will be collecting data for the United
States to use in secret, and that it will not be shared with the public (Rhodes, 2005). Daniel Martin Varisco, of Hofstra University, asks the following question: "Can an anthropologist,
or any kind of social scientist for that matter, follow the disciplines majority view of a "prime directive" to safeguard the "other" and at the same time work under the
rules of engagement as defined by the Pentagon, which understandably puts a premium on protecting American personnel first and carrying out orders from above?" (Embedded Anthropologists," 2007). Proponents of the
integration of scientists with the troops claim that the claims are nonsense and that critics really do not understand the program. While not expressly stated in the article, there are
other fears that might erupt such as the compromise of objectivity. How can scientists truly be objective when they are helping a government? The other ethical dilemma goes to danger.
These scientists are asked to put their lives in danger by working in these areas. This is a problem suggested by Varisco in an article published in The Chronicle of
Higher Education (Embedded Anthropologists," 2007). One can begin to see that while using the ideas of anthropologists may be helpful in the scheme of things, it is also something that
