face. This causes many problems in many realms of society. From discrimination in the workplace, to outright prejudice in society, the elderly are often dismissed, ignored, and feared by the
society overall. There are perhaps many reasons for such discrimination and prejudice, as people are generally taught that growing old is something that is negative in many ways. People generally
believe that the elderly are physically incapable of many things and that they are also mentally impaired as well. In a society that relies on youth and beauty for all
levels of success and desire the elderly are pushed aside, perhaps in the hopes they will remain silent and disappear. The following paper first examines and critiques an editorial article
by Germaine Greer, a 66 year old woman, who argues that age discrimination is dangerous in society. The paper then examines a legislative case involving age discrimination. Lastly the paper
presents a reflective discussion of how a knowledge and acceptance of aging and the aging process can be helpful for business and management. Critique From a social perspective
many Western societies essentially look down upon older citizens, almost fearful of what they themselves will (hopefully) one day attain. While people hope they live long, they are also fearful
of becoming old for society has imbedded the ideal that youth is where power and desire lay. In Greers article she begins with the following social examination of the problem:
