As our world continues to evolve we are faced with a greater and greater percentage of the population
that is in need of outside help to insure that they live happy and healthy lives. The intent of this paper is to discuss the factors that affect that
need, to outline how research can better delineate those factors, and to make suggestions as to how we can most positively intervene to address the problems that arise.
With the growing elderly population and the changes in our familial lifestyles we as a nation are faced with a number of societal complexities which
we havent experienced at any other time in our histories. Partially as a result of improved health care practices which result in longer life and partially as the result
of the movement away from the nuclear family of yesterday, the elderly now represent a substantial percentage of the population which is considered most at need in the U.S.
Many elderly are indeed appropriately classified as a "population at risk". Not only do the elderly have to contend with their bodies growing
older and being less capable of providing for their own needs, they have to deal with an assortment of societal problems as well. Housing, for example, is an issue
