than answers and although they have been the focus of speculation and investigation, there is some information that historians and archeologists have been able to piece together. Because the
pyramids have survived for so long, there are facts that are known. They have been worn by time and tourism and other factors (Lemonick 60). Still, they are physical entities,
not merely ideas or concepts. Pyramids exist because they were well built. Today, homes that are one hundred or so years old are considered to be outdated. People lovingly restore
houses that are one hundred to perhaps three hundred years old, but they are no where as sturdy as the Egyptian periods first built around 2700 B.C. The fact that
they were so well constructed and designed makes them one of the seven wonders of the world and open to much speculation about how they were built. II.
How the Pyramids Were Built It is believed that the pyramids were built by the Egyptians around 2700 B.C. ("World" PG). The King Snefru purportedly designed and built
the first true pyramids (Marlowe and Radwan 66). The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy defines pyramids as being "a group of huge monuments in the Egyptian desert, built as burial
vaults for the pharaohs" ("World" PG). It goes on to say that the pyramids have square bases and four triangular faces and further, that its building required vast amounts of
slave labor. The tallest pyramid, also called the Great Pyramid, stands 450 feet into the sky, and was created by more than two million limestone blocks ("Think" 41).
